Raffin Organs
Orgelbau Raffin, Abigstraße 9 - D-88662 Überlingen, Germany.
Tel. 07551/9529-0  Fax : 07551/9529-29   Web site
Joseph Raffin celebrated his 40th year in business during the year 2000.  After initially building and restoring church organs, he became interested in mechanical organs in the 1970s.  In 1977 he built his first batch of 13 organs.
Orgelbau Raffin is now probably the most prolific builder of small hand-turned street organs in the world.  In 1988, Mr Raffin was awarded the "Oscar Europe" for his contributions to the industry.

Raffin organs come in two basic sizes: 20-note and 31-note, although there are many different configurations of each version.  Models are classified by a number (Rxx/yy) where xx represents the number of musical notes (20 or 31) and yy is the number of pipes in the organ.

20-Note "Mini" Portable Organ (R20/31)
This is the smallest pipe organ in the range, and is designed for portability and convenience.  The crank can be attached to the back, or on the side for easy playing while carrying the organ by the strap included. A transparent baffle can be installed in front of the pipes to reduce the volume for indoor use.  A switchable rank of metal flute pipes adds musical variety, or wooden piccolo pipes can be substituted for an additional cost.

Standard features:

31 bourdon pipes; double bellows are covered with high quality goat skin; the heavy brass fittings are gold plated; the case is hand painted or optional inlaid wood veneer; ball bearing driving elements and maintenance friendly design; volume lever.
Dimensions: Width 18", Height 14", Depth 13", Weight 26 pounds.

Standard 20-Note Organ (R20/31 or R20/40)
The distinctive sound of this organ is produced by two ranks of celeste bourdon pipes.  These 9 special double melody pipes are tuned to produce the lovely "singing" sound typical of Dutch street organs.  The standard organ has 31 wooden bourdon pipes, but a switchable rank of 9 metal flute pipes can be added, resulting in the R20/40 organ.

Standard Features:
Bellows are covered with high quality goat skin; the heavy brass fittings are gold plated; the case can be hand painted or inlaid wood veneer.
Dimensions: Width 19", Height 23", Depth 13", Weight 44 pounds.

Options:
Switchable rank of 9 metal flutes; inlaid wood veneer case; digital electronic music storage system.      More information - or buy one

20-Note Reed Organ (R20/40Z)
This organ produces its sound on 40 accordian-type reeds instead of pipes (2 reeds per note).  This produces a distinctive "happy" sound.
The 20/40Z was first offered in the 1970s and discontinued after several years. It is now available again in very limited quantities to commemorate Mr. Raffin’s 40th year in business, the year 2000. The commemorative production run of just 12 organs is almost sold out and the decision whether to produce more will be made according to demand.  If you are interested in owning one of these special organs please inquire about price and availability.

Standard Features:
Double bellows are covered with high quality goat skin; the heavy brass fittings are gold plated; the case is hand painted or inlaid wood veneer; a swinging front door allows softer playing for indoor use.

Options:
Inlaid wood veneer case.     More information - or buy one

20-Note Concert Pipe Organ (R20/67 or R20/78)
The 20 note "Concert" series are the most elaborate and capable 20-note organs ever designed.  They provide much of the same versatility as the 31 note "Concert" series organs, yet still use the less expensive 20 note music.  With 5 or 6 switchable registers it can produce an amazing variety of sounds and the clarinet rank has a loud, bold sound similar to the wooden trumpets used in the 31 series organs.  The organ has bourdon, flute, violin, clarinet, and piccolo registers.  The 20/78 organ also has a metal flute register.
Standard Features:
Double bellows covered with high quality goat skin; volume control lever; the heavy brass fittings are gold plated; hand-painted case or inlaid wood veneer; 2 wooden side handles.
Dimensions: Width 25", Height 29", Depth 18", Weight 110 pounds.

Options:
Switchable rank of 11 metal flutes; 3 switchable bass reed pipes; inlaid wood veneer case; digital electronic music storage system.     More information - or buy one

31-Note "Concert" Pipe Organ (R31/84 or R31/100)
The 31 note Raffin organs are truly “concert” capable organs. The 31-note scale coupled with four or five switchable stops gives these organs almost unbelievable musical capability. You do not simply crank this organ, it can truly be "played." The organ grinder can vary the tempo, volume and sound of the tune, lending his own personal interpretation to the tune. All types of music is possible on this organ including classical and religious. People are often heard to say: "how can that much music come from that small box?".  This organ has flute, bourdon, violin and piccolo registers.  The 31/100 organ also has a metal flute register.
Standard Features:
Double bellows covered with high quality goat skin; volume control lever; the heavy brass fittings are gold plated; hand-painted or inlaid wood veneer; 2 wooden side handles.
Dimensions: Width 25", Height 29", Depth 18", Weight 110 pounds.
